Match Report
T2’s final league match of the season saw the return fixture with Kelvinpark, and a chance to finish with a flourish.
T2 started the game how they had finished on Thursday, by taking possession from the kick off and attacking the Park defence. And the first goal came within the first few minutes of the game. Gordon cracking a free kick at goal and the keeper only able to touch onto the bar, the resulting loose ball being saved by the keeper, who got injured in the process and Sommerville was on hand to nod the ball home from 6yds. A great start for T2 and it was important that the tempo was maintained, but this only resulted in firing Kelvinpark up. And they levelled the game just a few moments later through a penalty. The Park winger drawing the foul from White when there seemed no danger, Davidson guessed the correct way but was beaten by the accuracy. It was clear that Park were fired up, and some crude challenges showed that they’d decided to be a much more physical force. They extended their lead through another stick on penalty, Davidson guessing correctly again but again beaten by accuracy.
T2’s task was made much harder with two goals in quick succession, the midfielder given space and time to fire beyond Davidson, then Davidson completely misjudging a shot that trickled in at the far post. T2 got a goal back through a penalty of their own which Gordon converted, for his 3rd goal in 4 starts, to give T2 hope for the second half.
With the injured Boville being replaced by Smith O’Shea, the second half began brightly for T2 but the killer goal arrived just minutes into the second period. A couple of corners, eventually being converted, which McGill just failed to clear at the back post. It was always going to an uphill struggle and to their credit the guys continued to apply themselves in the correct way, both teams continued to attack and although the heat contributed to a general fatigue, it was an entertaining match right to end.
Although the result was disappointing, in spells we played some really nice stuff, but in the end a combination of poor decision making and sloppy goals meant that Kelvinpark were well worth their victory. Unfortunately this has been the story of what has been an up and down 1st season. But there has been some really pleasing results and performances along the way. Next season will be all about improvement but also attempting to gain some consistency, as at this level of amateur football this is half the battle.
I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has contributed this season, both directly and indirectly. Personally speaking I’d just like to thank Scott MacKinnon, who has not only played through the pain barrier for the majority of the season but who also has been an excellent person to bounce ideas of off. Also like to thank Umar Rehman who in his first season of 11’s football has shown everything that could be expected from a captain, both on and off the park.
We now have the possibility of a semi-final of a cup to compete for, as well as another cup tie, so it would be nice if the guys can continue to bring it for another couple of weeks at least.
