A return to Milton, and the arrival of 2nd Division Glynhill for this McCreadie cup tie. After last weeks hard fought victory NKU 2nd’s we’re hoping to build up a head of steam going into the home stretch of the season.
The game began slowly for both teams, with the ball being battered about in midfield both teams were at least attempting to open the game up. The match burst to life just before half time, Glynhill worked the ball wide, and the winger was allowed to drift into the box, where he finished with a plomb off the underside of the bar.
NKU’s response was almost instantaneous, Sommerville doing well to work the ball up to Uppal, who jinked past a couple of tackles to fire a squiggler beyond the goalkeeper from 18yds. Perfect time to respond and something to work on the second half.
The second half began much like the 1st, with both competing but very little end product from either side. Glynhill's best chances coming from two well taken free kicks which Devine done well to save, and at the other end NKU’s best chance came from a well taken corner which was met well but lacked the power to trouble the keeper.
So for the 1st time this season we were into extra time, and the toll was beginning to tell as Smith O’Shea replaced the injured MacMillan midway through the 2nd half, and then McIllroy took a sore one on the ankle, replaced by Jordan. Glynhill were looking to kill the game off quickly but were wasteful in front of goal, failing to trouble Devine. And with NKU hanging on, most guys looked dead on their feet, a moment of magic from MacKinnon, sealed what was a surprise victory.
With the game looking like it would be settled by penalties, Davidson slung a tired leg at the ball, and this in turn released MacKinnon through the middle, he sprinted away from the defenders and managed to get a shot off, which the keeper couldn’t get enough on to keep out, and the ball trundled over the line.
All told this match could have went either way, Glynhill obviously a division above will be disappointed , but we matched them throughout the game, with some amazing performances all over park, the back three marshalled the strikers brilliantly, Devine in goal keeping us in the match and MacKinnon who’s drive and tenacity puts guys 10 years his junior to shame. IMMENSE GUYS, that’s all I can say
