Glenavon Th v NK United
GDSML League 20/04/2010
Glenavon Th 2 - 0 North Kelvin United
Craignuek
18.30 KO

NKU tried to put the past 2 result behind them as the took on a Glenavon side who had beat them 3-0 earlier in the season. Both teams started pretty well but with no chances being created. With the pitch being in absolute shocking condition and the swirling wind it was certainly not a night for the purist.

The midfield battle between John Fraser and giant Glenavon number 6 was always looking like the key contest in the game. In a fairly even first 30 minutes the game then too a dramatic twist when NKU keeper Smith crumpled to the ground in agony NKU manager Burns had to re-shuffle the pack with Skipper Spence taking over in goal and Fraser moving into the centre half role.

The remainder of the half was played out in an uneventful manner, so with Glenavon taking to the field in the 2nd half with the wind at there back they looked like favourites to come away with points. The aforementioned Glenavon giant was winning everything against sub Watson who in fairness could be little to win this aerial battle.

For all the pressure from Glenavon it was NKU who almost broke the deadlock when Donohoe was put through one on one with the keeper but the normally deadly striker fired wide of the keepers left hand post. After that Thistle continued to press but this had 0-0 written all over until a knockdown from the giant fell to the Glenavon striker who toe poked past Spence.

NKU pressed to get an equaliser but a header from Donohoe was turned onto the bar by GT keeper. Glenavon then made it two when a wonder strike from about 30 yards flew past Spence into the top corner. NKU should have had a consolation right at death but a triple miss by Donohoe/Watson & Kay summed up NKU’s recent luck in front of goal.

On the night a draw would have been a fair result but once again slack defending and poor finishing resulted in another 3 points dropped. With the games are now coming thick and fast with 4 within the next 7 days so Manager Burns will have a job to try and lift the boys for this tough week of fixtures.
