Glasgow City Council announce plans to Upgrade North Kelvinside Pitches

Members of North Glasgow Football Development Group (NGFDG) met with officials of the newly formed Culture and Sport Glasgow (formerly CLS Dept of Glasgow City Council) last week to discuss the future of the North Kelvinside pitches.

The NGFDG was established in May 2005 by members of Crosslands AFC who identified the lack of opportunities, facilities and infrastructure in the north of Glasgow for young children (boys and girls) who are interested in football and wanted to address this. The group has also been involved in the high profile “Save the NK Pitches” campaign.

CS Glasgow has now published its long awaited Sports Pitch Strategy Report, which details plans to upgrade and improve sports facilities all over the city. The North West Area of Glasgow is recognised, as being short of community sports facilities and the planned upgrade of North Kelvinside pitches will enhance the opportunities for community sport in the area.
Mark Adams, Chairman of the NGFDG, added “This pitch and facility upgrade will provide the opportunity for children, young people and adults within North West Glasgow area to participate in sport in their own community and enjoy the associated benefits”.

This news is a great boost to the local area, and is testament to the hard work undertaken by members of the local community, local councillor Jim MacKechnie, North Kelvin Community Council and all the members of the NGFDG who campaigned for the long-term future of the pitches.

To celebrate this news the NGFDG are hosting another of their successful mini tournaments, in partnership with Sense over Sectarianism, on the 3rd June at the North Kelvinside Pitches on Queen Margaret Drive.

The NGFDG host weekly coaching sessions every Sunday Morning at 11 am until 12.30 pm at the North Kelvinside Pitches. All children of primary School age are welcome to come along, and all the children need to bring along with them is suitable clothing and footwear and 50p.
