PRESS RELEASE 14th April 2006
NORTH GLASGOW FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT GROUP RELAUNCHES WITH NEW PARTNER
North Glasgow Football Development Group have secured an exciting financial and educational partnership with “Sense Over Sectarianism”, an organisation, which is managed within Glasgow City Council and funded by the Scottish Executive.
The funding package from “SOS” secures the future of the NGFDG for the next 12 months and will allow the expansion of activities to include the setting up of teams, new and improved training and playing equipment and increased coaching time so more children can get involved. The initiative will also seek to encourage new members from diverse cultural, social and religious backgrounds to join the NGFDG.
The
NGFDG was established in May 2005 by members of Crosslands AFC who identified
the lack of opportunities, facilities and infrastructure in the north of Glasgow
for young children (boys and girls) who are interested in football and wanted
to address this. The group has also been involved in the high profile “Save
the NK Pitches” campaign.
The Sense Over Sectarianism organisation is a partnership between Glasgow
City Council, Nil By Mouth, the churches and Rangers and Celtic. Alison Logan
of SOS feels that football and sectarianism are inextricably linked.
She added: "It's part of where children have grown up, it's part of the
communities they are living in, it might be part of their mates and how their
mates support football. Children buy into that whole culture without fully
understanding what it's all about."
Mark Adams, Chairman of the NGFDG, added “This new partnership will
aim to provide education to both young people and adult members of the group
and hopes to help to eradicate the problem of sectarianism in the West of
Scotland”
To celebrate this new partnership the NGFDG are having a re-launch after the Easter break on the 23rd April at the North Kelvinside Pitches on Queen Margaret Drive. All children of primary School age are welcome to come along. The coaching starts at 12 and finished at 1.30. All the children need to bring along with them is suitable clothing and footwear and 50p.
